> [!tldr] What is meditation?
> Meditation involves three things:
>
> 1. *Samatha* – Tranquility of mind
> 2. *Vipassana* – Insight into the dhamma or things created
> 3. *Anupassana* – Deep dive and investigate. When Anupassana happens, the defilements (*asavas*) get eliminated.

> When the above is properly followed, one should be able to experience as per table below and should be the yardstick to measure our progress irrespective of whatever tradition / method / practice one has been introduced to as in Burmese, Sri Lankan, Thai etc.,

> | **_sambodhāya_** | Penetrating and experiencing for oneself 4 NOBLE TRUTH |
> | **_nibbānāya_** | Ending of craving, which then removes raga, dvesa and moha and attains nibbanā |

^7-qualities
We need to note that there are 3 aspects to be developed in Buddha’s method of meditation:
1. **_Sīla_** – Removal of immoral qualities and developing moral qualities in the mind (*citta*)
2. **_Samādhi_** – Refers to “maintaining a particular state’ where in mind is made to remain tranquil. This would involve being in ‘_sīla_‘ throughout the day where in ‘*sati*‘- mindfulness / awareness has to be developed
3. **_Pañña_** – Got through *Vipassanā and Anupassanā* practice which happens along with *silá* and *samādhi*
