# (2022-02-28) (Godly, Map of Buddha's path) Notes: Why is one Jealous and Miser | On [[DN21 Sakkapañhasutta]] Tags:: [[Papanca|Papañcasaññāsaṅkhā]], [[Vitakka & Vicara|Vitakka & Vicāra]], #dhamma/map, #dhamma/best/for-me > [!tip] Video > - **(Godly) Youtube: Why is one Jealous and Miser** (Vilas explains on DN21 - Sakkapañhasutta) (<https://youtu.be/e6qtUeMwTF8>) - Vilas: all gods and humans know **deep down** that they shouldn't have enmity and **behave in a violent way,** which **takes them down to animal and hell realms**. #vilas/wisdom - E.g. but when the Russians invade the Ukraine, even the Ukraine doesn't want to kill, they still turn violent and start killing. **@@ The chain** of dependent origination: - **Enmity** (vera) , **violence** (danda), and **hate** (byapajja) - <- **jealousy** (Issā) and **stinginess** (macchariya) - **@@** By **attaching a "value"**to things, e.g. money, promotion, etc. - <- **liking (piya) And disliking (apiya)** - <- Chanda **(fondness)** - Chanda is not "desire" as usual translated to be - <- Vitakka - Vi (extensively) + takka (debate) - **@@ Debating within oneself** - <- **papañcasaññāsaṅkhāya** (Concepts of identity that emerge from the proliferation of perceptions) - Papanca = proliferation - E.g. **story making** about my promotion, and how much I worked for it - Sanna - E.g. how I **perceive** this promotion to be something **so great**, and I'm **so happy** and excited about it. - Sankha = estimation / measurement - @@ i.e. **setting a value** on **promotion, money, Covid positive/negative, blood pressure**, etc. etc. - We do it for **EVERYTHING** in life. - **@@@@ If we remove the value, then this whole chain** **will stop** happening. - **@@** If you **live for earning (more)**, then there is a problem, but if you **earn for a living**, then money is just a tool. #need-vs-want - It creates **concepts** -- which is what the "**world**" is all about. - **@@ When you remove the concepts, there is no world.** Somanassa, Domanassa, and Upekkha - **Somanassa** = when the mind feels that what’s coming in from the 5 senses is _what it wants_ - Upekkha — when you pass 100 ppl by on the road, you don’t bother waving and saying “hi, how are you?” to everyone. And that _non-botheration_ is upekkha. **2 types (Skillful and unskillful) of** Somanassa, Domanassa, and Upekkha — **How to develop?** - 2 steps: - **1.** When it makes **_kusalā dhammā grow_** **and _akusalā dhammā decline_**_,_ you should cultivate (sevitabbaṁ) that - And gives up the one that makes akusala grows - **@@@@ 2.** when it involves with **avitakka, it’s better than** **savittaka** - **@@** What is **Vitakka / vicara** v.s. **savitakka / savicara** v.s. **avitakka / avicara** - 1\. Vitakka/vicara is **debating and pondering** in general (i.e. **including worldly things**) - 2\. Savitakka/savicara (when used in 1st jhana), is debating and pondering about **Dhamma (Buddha’s teachings)** - Bring something else to vitakka, e.g. etan santan ..., or namo tassa bhagavato ... - 3\. Avitakka/avicara is **not debating and pondering at all!** - **@@@@ ==Map: akusala vitakka / vicara -> kusala vitakka / vicara -> _avitakka / avicara_==** - i.e. you **first develop somanassa by developing the kusala (via savitakka and savicara), then you slowly drop vitakka entirely.** - e.g. like in 1st jhana you bring in dhamma vicaya, then you drop it in 2nd jhana. - **@@ ==World matters -> Dhamma matters -> Nothing matters==** - Same as the 5-step process described in [[MN137 Saḷāyatanavibhaṅgasutta]] - Question: **(subtle) Why should I cultivate the domanassa at all??** - **@@@@** Vilas: Buddha is talking about the **domanassa of NOT able to attain all the jhanas!** - e.g. when I’m walking and the mind started chattering, I should be aware that it’s chattering and I should feel domanassa! - **Me: I’m in a lot of domanassa of this kind!** - When you goes to **avitakka and avicara**, you will be able to progress because there is no attachment to jhanas also! - Question: **(subtle) Why are there 2 types of upekkha??** - **@@** When we meet someone for the first time, there is upekkha because there is no knowledge of this person, **BUT** this upekkha has **all 10 akusala are associated to it — just waiting for an opportunity to appear.** - As soon as any knowledge is gained on that person (e.g. he’s working at a competing company), then **the upekkha is gone.** - **@@** Me: it’s similar to a **young kid feeling indifferent to money** - **@@** i.e. **One should cultivate upekkha for people/things they know they “liked or disliked” before** Remaining: - **@@ Respond** (with yoniso manasikara), but **NOT React** (with ayoniso manasikara) - **@@@@ Mind is like a field -- you can't keep it open -- you have to cultivate good thoughts so bad ones doesn't come.** - **@@@@** Eryu: So working with akusala and kusalā is exactly like how you'd treat a field! I.e. first **1) remove weeds, then 2) prevent weeds, 3) plant flowers, 4) keep cultivating it!** - **@@ Yoniso** (manasikara) **= going to the root / nature of things** - Ayoniso = being in ignorance - **@@ The biggest fear is not knowing where we're going next.** - **@@ When we put that, akusala dhamma immediately goes down.** - **@@** Katrina/vilas: the challenge for a teacher is to **come down to the level of his student**, rather than staying high in his own experiences. - **@@** Vilas: **to grow, we have to take pain. When we take the Dhamma pain, we are closer to liberation. Else, we go towards bondage**
