### A higher-level outline
(From end of video 1 by Vilas)
1. Nimita on breath
2. Remove hindrances
3. Remove defilements
4. Establish samadhi
---
## Goal: Have *Ekattā* (Oneness)
- When the breath becomes one, then ...
- kaya sankhara (in and out breath) will cease.
- Vaci sankhara (Vitakka and vicara) will not be there
- Mano sankara (feeling and perception) can also cease
- **@@ (Ultimate Goal) Then, anicca, dukkha, anatta, and asubha can be seen**
- Practice
- **Be in ekattā with:**
- (Same 8 as supports above)
- Nekkhammaṃ, abyāpādo, ...
- These are the 8 things we need to develop
- So we can **remove the 8 nīvaraṇā** (hindrances):
- (Same as the 8 obstacles above)
- kāmacchando, byāpādo, ...
**TODO: expand**
---
## Detailed steps
### Step 1: Remove obstacles
#### 8 obstacles and supports
- #nivarana
- Katha: [[{Vilas Blog} Practical Anapanassatikatha#1 & 2. EIGHT Obstacles & EIGHT Solution|link]]
- Narrated by Vilas in [[#Part 1]] and ??
> [!INFO] What is an obstacle?
> - Vilas: When watching the breath, the ***citta* can be deflected** towards kamacchando, etc.
> - **@@** when that happens, **you lose the awareness of the phassa (touching of nostrils)**
> - @@@@ When you’re able to know the touching, there are no obstacles; **else, there is an obstacle!**
> [!TODO] Eryu: My Practice **Goal!**
> @@@@ ==For ***100% of the time***, either be 1) watching the breath (contact), or 2) ***Note down*** what hindrances were there, and for **how long**!== #dhamma/practice/eryu
(Format: Obstacle — Support)
1. *kāmacchando* — *nekkhammaṃ*
- **@@** nekkhammaṃ - **letting go of the Dhamma which has come**
- Eryu: e.g. practice [[Asubha]] and let go of the raga for woman body.
2. *byāpādo* **—** *abyāpādo*
- abyāpādo: practice [[Metta]] -- e.g. all beings are losing breaths and we don't know where they're heading next.
3. *thinamiddhaṃ* **—** ==***ālokasaññā***== (Perception of light)
- @@ With closed eyes, comfortably look up and concentrate on the **center of your eyebrow** (pineal gland), where you'll see light (in darkness)! Just watch the light and sleep will go away!
- (Update 6/17/22) Vilas: You have to **==keep rubbing in clock wise until you see the light!!!==**
- (Update 7/30/22) See this [[(2022-07-30) Vilas on how to do Yoga breathing to remove restlessness AND drowsiness#^9dcb7e|note]] also.
- What Buddha taught muggallana.
- Started in yogi traditions.
- Ālokasaññā is one of the 10 ways to address Thina middha. Some other ones are: ^f2e2ec
- perceive a bright day light when it is night.
- **@@ Pull your ear lobs with your fingers**
- **Take a walk**
- **Wash face!**
- **Or just drink water!**
4. *uddhaccaṃ* — ***avikkhepo* (undistractedness)**
- Vikkhepo means shaking extensively. Avikkhepo means still.
- **@@ Simple solution: take a ==few deep breaths== and then relax.** The restlessness will go away.
- **==TODO: try!==**
- **@@** Another way is to **press your nostril**, to ==**breath in from one nostril and out the other**== and alternate.
- See **vilas talk [[(2022-07-02) (WOW!) Restlestness in the BODY = no jhana!#^8459be|here]]!**
5. *vicikicchā* **— *dhammavavatthānaṃ*** (knowing the Dhamma in a proper way)
- **@@** Simple solution: Just watched a breath and ask yourself, is it increasing or diminishing? If it's diminishing is it sukha or dukkha? If something is diminishing and dukkha, is it atta, or anatta?
6. ***avijjā* — *ñāṇaṃ*** (wisdom)
7. ***arati*** (dissatisfaction) — ***pāmojjaṃ*** (feeling glad, joyful, and content about whatever is here)
- Arati brings in **boredom**.
- 4 strategies to remove arati/boredom:
- 1\. (Mind) Remembering the good time you ever had
- Me: **maybe remind myself of the anatta experience!?**
- 2\. (Mind) put something on **Dhamma that's melodious** and easy going (e.g. etan santan, or karaniya metta sutta)
- Me: Vilas' **metta** song video or **jinapañjaraṁ** music!
- 3\. (Body) **Cleansing oneself**: urine or drinking water or washing the face
- 4\. (Body) **Stretch your body** (More oxygen) -- cuts sleepiness and boredom
8. ***sabbe akusalā dhammā*** (10 immoral deeds) — *sabbe kusalā dhammā*
- Mentally work on dasa akusala (per cunda sutta), set Sila on each one then watch the breath, **one at a time**.
- **Forgive yourself** (metta) if you've made mistakes.
- Abhicca -- wanting more and better than what you have
- **@@ You currently have EXACTLY what you deserve. Not more, not less.**
- If a wish is granted, it means that you deserved it.
---
### Step 2: Watch the following 16:
#### 2.1 Long breaths
1) Knowing **9 types** of long breaths ([[{Vilas Blog} Practical Anapanassatikatha#Paṭhamacatukkaniddeso|source]])
- 3 noting long breaths
- for in, out, in and out
- 3 breath becoming subtle through willingness
- 3 gladness due to breath becoming subtle through willingness
2) **Establish mindfulness,** then do **kāyaṃ anupassati** (mindfulness of the body) for the following qualities ([[{Vilas Blog} Practical Anapanassatikatha#Anupassatī ti kathaṁ taṁ kāyaṁ anupassati|source]]):
- Anicca (anupassati)
- Gives up nicca
- Dukkha
- Gives up sukha
- Anatta
- Gives up atta
- Nibbida
- Gives up Nandati (i.e. nanda, rejoice)
- Virajjati
- Gives up rajjati (finds pleasure in; to be attached to)
- Nirodha
- Gives up samudeti (to arise)
- Paṭinissajjati
- Gives up ādiyati (to take up; take to oneself)
3) For each of **(vedana, sanna, vitakka)** understand the following qualities:
- Understanding the **4 arising conditions**
- Avijja
- Tanha
- Kamma
- Phassa
- Understanding the **3 qualities of presence**
- Anicca
- Seeing khaya (the presence of diminishing or receding)
- Dukkha
- Seeing bhaya (fearsomeness)
- Anatta
- Seeing sunna (emptiness)
- Understanding the **4 disappearing conditions**
- (The ceasing of the same 4 as arising)
4) Integrate the following:
- integrate 5 indriya (sadda, viriya, sati, samadhi, paññā)
- Integrate 5 bala (powers)
- Integrate 7 bojjhanga
- Integrate 8-fold path
- Integrate Dhamma
- ...
- Integrate 4 mindfulness
- TODO: more

## [[Vilas]] Talk series on #Youtube
### Original series
###### Intro
- https://youtu.be/cQXnW9StdrU
- **Intro** - Ananapanassati through Paṭisambhidāmagga Day 1
- it's like trying yo take a picture of a **tiger**, and the tiger doesn't come until it's *very* quiet.
- The katha gives you methods to investigate by the way of 32 or 72, whereas the sutta only talks about 32.
- @@@@ the **point is NOT to get into one-pointed-ness** of watching only a single place on the nostril, but to become **"one with the breath"**!
- **Sāriputta said just like a saw is cutting a tree**, the carpenter should not pay attention to the teeth of the saw coming and going, but should observe how it's touching the tree. In the same way, you don't focus on the coming and going of the breath, but focus on the contact of the breath (on the nose tip or the upper lip).
- What is the task?
- **Imperfections come to be abandoned in one who is energetic, and his thoughts (vitakka) are stilled**
- ([1hr in](https://youtu.be/cQXnW9StdrU?t=3602)) **@@@@** Based on **Richard's experience**, Vilas gave a fantastic explanation of what [[Nibbana]] (and anatta) is. 🙂 ^2df5e6
- **@@@@ Nibbana is like the sky** **\-- it's unconditioned.** But whether you'll experience it or not is conditioned by the clouds. When you're fully established in nibbānā, then everything will look to you as clouds, there is no movement in the mind, because there is no raga, dvesha and moha. And you're in perfect peace.
- @@ Nibbana is like **darkness** -- it's there as *long as* there is no light. In that sense, you could say it's conditioned also.
###### Part 1
- https://youtu.be/tSKmLymSTbw
- **@@** Vilas gave an ***Outline*** of the katha ([[#^26406f|notes]]).
> [!tip] How to watch the breath?
> - @@@@ ***==Nimitta==*** taken here is the ***==touching==*** of the **in and out breath**, and we need to keep on **remembering** that, and that is the ***Sati***. ^64bb37
> - @@ Watch **ONLY the *Phassa*, NOT following the breath** (as per the **tree and saw simile**)
> - **@@@@** It's an ***Observation*, not *Concentration*!**
^how-to-watch-breath
- **@@** Vilas explained on [[#8 obstacles and supports]]
- **@@** Vilas explained on [[#Goal Have Ekattā Oneness]]!
- When it happens, all 3 types of [[Sankhara]] will **STOP**.
- **TODO**: 31m in
- Ariya magga = noble path because "riya" means goes in circles and "ariya" means no longer going in circles.
- The circle of chasing senses, etc.
- Vilas gave great real life examples of how the 8 obstacles and supports apply.
###### P2
- **Part 2 -** Ananapanasati through Paṭisambhidāmagga - Day 3 (<https://youtu.be/Jd5av_-wRJs>)
- Nimitta -- how to see it?
- **@@** "Eryu" is a **GIVEN name, it's given, not yours.**
- **@@@@** If you could **remove that nimitta**, and **instead just observe the touching of the breath,** then **you will establish on the nimitta of the breath**.
- The 6R of vimanaramsi bhante works exactly the same as breath meditation (he brings the happiest moment and keep observing it and dropping other thoughts, which takes to brahma viharas).
- Recognize, release, **relax**, Repeat ...
- The 5 indriya comes in pairs!
- **Sati is at the middle**
- **@@ Viriya and samādhi is a balancing pair**
- Too much effort caused Uddacca and you can't get into samadhi
- Too much samadhi you get into sleepiness
- **@@ You have to keep watching the balance during meditation!**
- Sadda and Panna is another pair.
###### P4
- **Part 4** - Ananapanasati through Paṭisambhidāmagga..Day 4 ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4TCk6NJ9FY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4TCk6NJ9FY&list=WL&index=58))
- Vilas talked about ***loka***, which is important to understand when we do the jhanas.
- (40m in) In Human realm and below you also have to **first take the pain before getting the pleasure**
- **@@@@** In these realms, **Pleasure is nothing but the *Removal of pain*!**
- e.g. I am so hungry and driving around for food, the moment I have the food, I’m released from the pain, **which we call as pleasure!**
- **@@** Buddha said **all realms should be experienced and investigated (abinna)**
- which we will do by practicing Jhanas using anapanasati sutta!
- There are total of:
- 31 sattaloka (realms of beings)
- 33 Saṅkhāraloka or khanda loka (World of mental formations & actions/free-will/fabrications)
- Okasaloka (World of things)
###### Q&A
- **Q&A** - <https://youtu.be/1-_QQEOHPTc>
- **@@** A very simple way to cut uddhacca (random thoughts keeps coming) is to **just take a few breaths, drink some waters, then watch your breaths with the eyes open.**
- You'll keep seeing thoughts coming like day dreaming, but after watching for 10-15 mins it'll stop.
- (Around 55:00) just watching the breath as a whole works but not as deep as Sāriputta's method. One problem is that after the breath gets subtle **you'll lose the "nimitta" of the breath** (because it's too subtle to feel), **and you'll go to sleep.**
- So you have to bring some other nimitta to watch (e.g. watching the anicca in in and out breath, every in breath is life, out breath is death).

- Counter to kamachanda == Nekkhammaṃ
- **@@** By seeing the **adinava (danger)** — that it is **anicca**, **dukkha**, and **viparinama** dhamma.
###### 2022-05-03 - P5
- **#5** - hindrances - on byapada and thina-middha (https://youtu.be/zQxGqno_uGk)
- Byapada
- \[Practice\] Look at all the times that we got irritated, frustrated, angry during the day -- there would be **attachments** (Eryu: i.e. **tanha**) and **expectations** (Eryu: i.e. **avijja**)
- **@@ Solution:** Apply **adinava** -- i.e. seeing that it's **anicca, dukkha,** and **viparinama** dhamma.
- Thina-middha
- Common yet major hindrances
- @@ For **long sits** (e.g. 2hr), **thina middha** and **uddhacca** will come up.
- 15 - 45 mins into the sit, the mind becomes **rigid** (e.g. **clinging to impressions**) and slow/difficult to wield (_sloth_), and body becomes **drooping** and bending (_torpor_)
- \[Practice\] Alokasanna
- Use your index finger to feel the center of the eyebrows
- Slightly raise your eyebrows and watch the center of it, but don’t strain the eyes
- After 5-20 mins, the light **WILL** start to appear
###### 2022-05-31 - Conclusion!
